Polychrome Pendant Tutorial

The Polychrome Pendant tutorial teaches beaders how to create a vibrant, layered pendant featuring a bezel for an 18mm rivoli using GemDuos, RoundDuos, 4mm rounds or crystals, and seed beads (11/0 & 15/0). The project starts with a base ring of GemDuos and builds outward with structured layering, decorative embellishments, and a secure bezel to encase the rivoli crystal. The tutorial walks through every step clearly—from working with multi-hole beads to adding a wire guard and jump ring for finishing. The piece has a bold floral symmetry and can be customized easily with different colors or bead substitutions. It's an ideal intermediate-level project for exploring layered beading techniques and bezel construction.

    Quick Project Steps

Build the Base Bezel Ring: String alternating: 1 × GemDuo (hole 1, face up) → 1 × 11/0. Repeat until you have 10 GemDuos and 10 seed beads. Form into a ring and reinforce the loop. Add RoundDuos: Move into hole 2 of each GemDuo. Between every two GemDuos, add: 1 × RoundDuo (hole 1). Go all the way around and reinforce. Add the Second GemDuo Layer: Step up into hole 2 of the RoundDuos. Between each, add a new GemDuo (face opposite direction). This creates a double-layered bezel with RoundDuos in between. Insert the Rivoli: Flip the bezel so the back GemDuos (first layer) form the setting. Drop the rivoli (face up) into the center. Tighten the Bezel: Stitch through the inner circle again. Pull gently but firmly to tighten around the rivoli. Optional: add 15/0s between Delicas or GemDuos for extra tension or decoration. Add Outer RoundDuos: Exit outer GemDuo row. Add: 1 × 11/0 → 1 × RoundDuo (hole 1) → 1 × 11/0. between each outer GemDuo to form a second ring. Add 4mm Rounds or Bicones: Between each pair of outer RoundDuos: Add: 1 × 4mm bead. This fills the spaces and adds sparkle. Create the Wire Guard Loop: Exit from a RoundDuo or central top bead. Add: 1 × 11/0 → wire guard → 1 × 11/0. Go back into the pendant to form a loop. Reinforce 2–3 times for strength. Finish the Thread: Stitch through beads to secure the thread. Tie half-hitch knots between beads. Trim or burn excess thread carefully. Add Jump Ring & Cord: Open a jump ring. Pass it through the wire guard loop. Attach to chain, cord, or earring finding.

I'm becoming discouraged with Potomac Beads. Quantities are large and there are no options for smaller quantities, even at a somewhat higher price. Also, the quality of workmanship on sample pattern items is not always first class (Boh Bow earrings, for example). Is that to show makers that they will make errors? I am not attracted to sloppy work.
