How to Make Your Own Earwires and Earring Findings
PotomacBeads Pliers - Round Nose Pliers

Episode Transcript

Introduction

In this episode of Better Beader, we'll explore the art of creating your own earwires and earring findings. Making your own earring components not only saves money but also allows for endless customization possibilities. Join us as we guide you through the process step-by-step, based on the techniques shared in Better Beader Episode 71 by Potomac Beads.

Materials Needed

  • 20-gauge wire (half-hard or dead soft)
  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Flush cutters
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Cup bur or jewelry file (optional, for smoothing wire ends)

Step-by-Step Tutorial

  1. Cut a piece of 20-gauge wire approximately 2.5 inches long using flush cutters.
  2. Using round nose pliers, create a small loop at one end of the wire. This loop will be the front of your earwire.
  3. Grip the wire with chain nose pliers about 1 inch down from the small loop. Bend the wire at a 90-degree angle.
  4. Reposition the chain nose pliers another inch down from the bend and create a second 90-degree bend in the opposite direction. This forms the shape of your earwire.
  5. Trim the excess wire, leaving about 1/4 inch of a straight tail.
  6. Use round nose pliers to create a tiny closed loop at the end of the tail. This loop prevents the earring from slipping off the earwire.
  7. Optional: Use a cup bur or jewelry file to smooth any sharp edges on the wire ends for added comfort.
  8. Repeat the process to create a second earwire for the pair.

Tip: Experiment with different loop sizes and shapes to create unique designs. You can also hammer the earwires for a textured look.

Customization Ideas & Inspiration

  • Try using different gauges of wire for a thicker or thinner earwire look.
  • Experiment with various metal types, such as sterling silver, gold-filled, or copper wire.
  • Create a wrapped loop at the front of the earwire for a decorative touch.
  • Incorporate beads or charms onto the front loop of the earwire for added embellishment.

Conclusion

Creating your own earwires and earring findings is a fun and rewarding project that allows you to personalize your jewelry designs. By following the steps outlined in this Better Beader episode, you'll be able to craft professional-looking earwires in no time. Feel free to experiment with different variations and customization ideas to make your earrings truly one-of-a-kind. Happy beading!

I've been a professional beader for around 25 years. Your website and tutorials are simply the best. Well done! Don't change. Not happy with purchase of 3mm round crystal AB nor the 14mm and 18mm rivolis. Poor quality crystals. Dull.
